Mozart: Coronation Mass, Ave Verum & Spatzenmesse

All Saints Church Bromsgrove
Saturday 19th May 2012
Richard Cook - Director

MozartWolfgang Mozart who lived from 1756 to 1791 was one of the greatest composers of all time. At best, Mozart's music has a natural flow and charm, and can express humour, joy or sorrow.

The Coronation Mass was composed in 1779. It is a traditional Roman Catholic Mass, a Missa brevis or short mass in which a rite of Coronation is celebrated. This could be the coronation of a monarch or the imposition of a regal crown upon an image of Jesus Christ or the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Ave Verum Corpus (Hail true body) is a short Eucharistic hymn which considers Jesus' real presence in the sacrament of the eucharist. It was written less than 6 months before Mozart's death, and the motet foreshadows aspects of a Requiem.

Both the complete work and the complete text are available from the choral domain public library.

The Spatzenmesse (or Sparrow Mass) gets this name on account of the figures which recall the chirping of birds."
